The Position
The Vice President of Construction will serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for providing strategic and operational oversight across all phases of the company’s construction activities — from business development and estimating through project execution and closeout.
This individual will work closely with the President and other senior leaders to develop business strategy, ensure operational excellence, and maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, and labor unions. The Vice President will be accountable for overall project performance, profitability, quality, and workforce development within a union environment.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
• Partner with the President to define and implement strategic objectives, annual business plans, and operational goals.
• Provide leadership and direction to all construction functions, including Business Development, Estimating, Project Management, and Field Operations.
• Promote a culture of safety, integrity, quality, and accountability throughout the organization.
• Develop and mentor high-performing teams while fostering collaboration and professional growth.
Business Development
• Oversee and support all business development efforts, maintaining and expanding relationships with key clients and partners.
• Identify and pursue new project opportunities in industrial, commercial, and institutional markets.
• Ensure proposals and pursuits align with company capabilities, resources, and profitability objectives.
Estimating & Preconstruction
• Provide executive oversight of estimating and preconstruction processes to ensure accuracy, competitiveness, and risk management.
• Review scopes of work, bid strategies, and cost models to maintain alignment with project delivery capabilities.
• Lead value engineering and constructability reviews to optimize project outcomes.
Project Execution & Operations
• Oversee execution of all projects, ensuring delivery on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with quality and safety standards.
• Work closely with project managers, superintendents, and field supervisors to ensure resource efficiency and client satisfaction.
• Ensure adherence to union labor agreements, maintain positive relationships with trade unions, and support apprenticeship and workforce development programs.
• Monitor project performance metrics and implement process improvements to enhance operational excellence.
Financial Management
• Develop and manage department budgets, forecasts, and performance targets.
• Monitor project profitability and operational performance, implementing corrective measures as required.
• Collaborate with finance and executive leadership to support overall company financial goals and reporting.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline; Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of 10–15 years of progressive leadership experience within a mechanical contracting environment.
• Strong technical and operational knowledge of HVAC, sheet metal, piping, plumbing, and medical gas systems.
• Demonstrated experience in union environments, with a solid understanding of collective bargaining agreements and labor relations.
• Proven success in managing business development, estimating, and large-scale project execution.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Strong financial and business acumen with the ability to interpret data and drive performance.
• Professional Engineering (PE) license, PMP certification, or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
